Just 20 minutes north of downtown Atlanta and situated on the Chattahoochee River, lies Sandy Springs, named after the natural springs within the city’s limits.
The city welcomed me with a host of varied entertainment options. The friendly small-town feel was a perfect complement to its lovely natural setting.
Beautiful Nature at Morgan Falls Overlook Park
Sandy Springs is lucky to have several gorgeous parks to enjoy, and one of the best has to be the 12-hectare Morgan Falls Overlook Park. The park features lovely porch swings to take in the views while enjoying a good book, an outdoor fireplace, barbecue grills and a brilliant children’s playground. It also makes the perfect scenic spot to picnic while gazing at the gorgeous sunsets that streak across the sky. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can also kayak down the Chattahoochee River or fish off one of the docks.
Delectable Dining and Local Artisan Foods
Sandy Springs has several wonderful restaurants offering everything from American to Mediterranean fare. Ray’s on the River is a must. Enjoy the pretty garden and riverside views while dining on delicious fresh seafood, prime-cut steaks and regionally grown vegetables.
The city specializes in locally produced artisan foods such as the tasty Susansnaps from the ultimate gingersnap cookie store. The adorably decorated Susansnaps is family-owned and was started after the daughter in the family became ill with Hodgkin’s disease. Ginger was found to soothe the chemotherapy effects and, after she recovered, the family decided to create something positive from the experience, and Susansnaps was born.
The CalyRoad Creamery next door is another must-taste for the handcrafted cheeses made from fresh farm ingredients. Specialty jams and organic locally produced honey can also be found there.
Live Music and Comedy Clubs
There are several entertainment options to suit all tastes and ages. One of my favorites is the Punchline Comedy Club, the longest running comedy club in Atlanta that has hosted numerous comedy legends, including Eddie Murphy and Jay Leno.
The last stop I made was Steve’s Live Music, where you can enjoy great food while listening to everything from blues and folk to Celtic and jazz. Attending the new Gospel Sunday brunch was so much fun. There’s also a great music shop attached, so definitely check it out.
For indulging in culture, nature, great food and entertainment with warm, welcoming people, you can’t beat a visit to Sandy Springs, Georgia.
