Discover cultural treasures in northwest Missouri’s historic frontier city

Saddle up for a culture-rich expedition through St. Joseph, where you can explore a fascinating array of museums and nature escapes. Walk in the footsteps of Jesse James, marvel at the determination of Pony Express riders and immerse yourself in the peaceful splendor of this Midwestern gem.

History and Heritage

Journey back in time to the Patee House Museum, home of the original Pony Express Office. Inside you’ll find a restored version of the former headquarters and an 1860 steam locomotive that transported passengers, goods and mail destined to reach the western frontier by way of Missouri. Next door, the Jesse James Home invites curious travelers to see the final residence of one of the most notorious outlaws in the USA – staged like it was during his final moments. Your western exploration continues at the Pony Express National Museum, also in close proximity. Here you can immerse yourself in the lives of the daring riders and walk the grounds of the original stables. Strap in for interactive experiences that include swapping out mochilas (mail bags), testing authentic saddles and pumping water from an original well.

From colonial portraits to the action-packed Wild West, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art presents 18th-21st century art in a 1930s mansion. Spend ample time exploring the nearby St. Joseph Museums – a hub of history that includes Glore Psychiatric Museum, the largest of its kind in the world, as well as the Black Archives Museum, Archaeology & Native American Galleries, and the Doll Museum. Don’t miss the Walter Cronkite Memorial at Missouri Western State University, paying homage to a broadcasting icon and one of St. Joseph’s native sons. Experience iconic moments from Cronkite’s career, including his coverage of the Apollo 11 moon landing and a replica of the CBS Newsroom where he hosted the evening news during the 1960s and 1970s.
