In April 2011, Kentaro Maruyama of Yokohama, Japan, photographed a fellow traveler enjoying the sunrise from Mather Point on the South Rim at Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona.

The visitor taking in the view adds perspective to the Grand Canyon’s immense size – 433 kilometers long, 16 kilometers wide and 1.6 kilometers deep.

The View from Mather Point

Mather Point has garnered popularity for its spectacular sunrise views, so much so that the U.S. National Park Service restricted vehicular traffic to enhance the visitor experience and expanded the area’s visitor center at the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
