Where molten lava collides with ocean waves

Thanks to scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the 2.6 million visitors to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park each year are privy to a wealth of information about the volcanoes that formed the Hawaiian Islands. The 134,795-hectare park was created around the world’s most active volcanoes – Kīlauea, which has been in continuous eruption since 1983, and Mauna Loa, which last erupted in 1984. Recognized as a World Heritage Site, plants and animals populate seven ecological zones here. Stop in the Kīlauea Visitor Center or Jaggar Museum to learn more about the land and the indigenous people who once thrived amid such mighty forces.

Volcanoes are living proof that the Earth hasn’t finished forming. You can witness it with your own eyes in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, located on the southeastern shore of the Big Island. Here, hot, molten lava carves pathways through the stark landscape, steaming as it meets the ocean.

If you have only a few hours to spend in the park, hop in the car and follow Crater Rim Drive to explore the summit of Kīlauea volcano. This scenic byway traces the summit caldera, passing through desert and lush tropical rain forest. The route then crosses the caldera floor, guiding you to many scenic overlooks. Along the way, you’ll find a number of short hiking trails that allow you a closer look at the unique landscape.
