Bordering Chicago along Lake Michigan, Chicago’s North Shore is considered one of the most scenic areas in metropolitan Chicago combining the proximity to Downtown Chicago with the charm and diversity of the area’s prosperous communities.
A trip to the North Shore begins in Evanston at the Charles Gates Dawes House, the historic home of the former Vice President, and continues on with a leisurely stroll through Northwestern University’s ivy-lined campus. Consistently ranked as a top national and global university, Northwestern is a founding member of the Big Ten Conference. Northwestern’s Evanston campus’ 240 acres sits on the shores of Lake Michigan and a walk through campus is a visual delight.
Continuing north, a drive along the region’s famed Sheridan Road follows a gorgeous, winding stretch of road that offers the most spectacular views of gracious homes, famed architecture and the bounty of nature. Just north, discover the Grosse Point Lighthouse, built in 1873 and designated a National Historic Landmark; the first lighthouse on the Great Lakes to carry that status. Continue on to see the Bahá’í House of Worship, the only one in the Western Hemisphere. Its white walls with lace-like ornamentation and its dome rising 135 feet above the main floor, create a scene of unsurpassed beauty and tranquillity.
Further north, The Chicago Botanic Garden, with its world-renowned plant collections and displays, is one of the country’s most-visited public gardens. You can explore dozens of natural gardens from the brightly coloured and whimsical to the peaceful, subtle and serene. Nearby, Ravinia Festival offers world-class performing arts throughout the summer in a luscious outdoor setting. The Illinois Holocaust Museum brings a unique cultural experience to the Midwest where visitors can explore important issues of tolerance. The North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie is a two-theatre complex presenting world-class theatre, dance, music and comedy. It serves as the focal point of the cultural landscape north of the City of Chicago.
Children love Kohl Children’s Museum, which allows kids from birth to age 8 to play in hands-on, interactive exhibit areas. Children get a taste of yesteryear at Wagner Farm. Milk a cow, hear a rooster marking time and see how bread is made in a wood-burning stove at this genuine American farm.
Chicago’s North Shore has become a foodie haven with many new additions of hot restaurants; Wheeling’s famed Restaurant Row is a must. If shopping is your passion, Chicago’s North Shore is the place for you! World-class shopping centres – Westfield Old Orchard, The Glen Town Center and Northbrook Court – are retail favourites, while the downtowns of Evanston and Winnetka offer cosmopolitan boutiques with genuine neighbourhood flair. And a visit to the North Shore is not complete without a visit to Abt Electronics in Glenview – the largest single-store electronics and appliance dealer in the United States.
