Fort Worth, Texas: Family Fun with Cowboys and Culture

By Luiza Florence

I grew up in the countryside, surrounded by nature, animals and plants, and learned at early age the culture and traditions of living off the land, so I was particularly excited to introduce my family to this heritage in the “City of Cowboys and Culture”. Fort Worth, Texas, is home to a wide variety of attractions that will suit the whole family – from museums and shopping to a world-class zoo and historic district. We saw it all on our recent holiday!

Cowboy Culture: The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District

The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District is a true centre of Western culture, both in its period architecture and cowboy-themed attractions and events. A major highlight for the kids is the twice-daily Longhorn Cattle Drive, when a parade of these massive animals promenades down Exchange Avenue. Afterward, stop in an antique candy shop for a special treat, or browse the many themed souvenir shops and Western outfitters.

The adults in your travel party won’t want to miss Billy Bob's Texas, known as the world’s largest Honky Tonk. It is almost impossible to describe the immensity of the dance floor here and the diversity of collectible decor that has been compiled over the years, such as vintage saddles, hats, buckles and autographs. Billy Bob’s even houses a small arena where they host live bull riding!

Five Incredible Museums in the Cultural District

It seems too good to be true, but fans of culture and museums will find in Fort Worth a piece of paradise. The city has grouped five major museums in one walk-able area, the Cultural District. Here, you’ll find three major art museums: the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Amon Carter Museum of American Art and Kimbell Art Museum. You’ll also find two family favourites: the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame.

Animal Encounters and Heart-stopping Thrills

Another must-visit attraction, and especially fun for kids, is the Fort Worth Zoo, which is home to more than 7,000 animals representing 500 species, including some native species from different regions of Texas. This is widely recognized as the oldest zoo in Texas, and is today ranked among the top five zoos in the United States.

And for the thrill seekers, Fort Worth is also home to Texas Motor Speedway, where you can catch NASCAR and IndyCar racing events.

Shopper’s Paradise

One of the things that gets me really excited about a destination is a diverse array of shopping options, and Fort Worth gets a “10” in this regard. In downtown’s Sundance Square, I found a little of everything: shopping, art galleries, restaurants, bars and even public events such as free concerts.

Before our trip ended, I couldn’t resist a visit to Grand Prairie Premium Outlets, where I found impressive savings on designer brands, such as Banana Republic, Bloomingdale's The Outlet Store, Brooks Brothers, Coach and Cole Haan.

And if you want to snag an authentic piece of the Old West, saddle up at Justin Boots Outlet. The selection of hand-crafted boots here is great; they have plenty of women’s, men’s and kids’ boots. Plus, the prices are better than at full retail stores. We brought home stylish pairs for the whole family!

Everyone has an inner cowboy spirit, and Fort Worth has the power to awaken that in your whole family! It is impossible to visit the city and not get delighted! Get ready!
