Natural and Culinary Adventures on Louisiana’s Northshore

The Northshore of Lake Ponchartrain may not be one of the first places that comes to mind when you think of travelling to Louisiana, but there are plenty of reasons why it should be. This beautiful stretch of five adjacent communities on the waterfront offers an amazing adventure for travelers, both in nature and in flavor.

Palmettos on the Bayou

Start the day with brunch at Palmettos on the Bayou, a local restaurant located right on Bayou Bonfouca. Sample local seafood and Cajun delicacies: catfish fingerlings, grits and grillades, spinach Madeleine, crawfish etouffee, bananas Foster and more. Not only is the food phenomenal, but you can often hear live music during Sunday brunch. Many locals tend to join in dancing during the most popular tunes. This is the perfect way to get energized before a day of exploring the area’s outdoor wonders.

Tammany Trace

Although driving is a great way to explore the parish, an even better way is along the Tammany Trace: a converted railroad track which is now a 31-mile trail connecting the small towns. You can jog it, bike it or rollerblade it, but either way, it’s a wonderful way to get a true sense of the area, while enjoying the fresh air and natural environment.

Global Wildlife Center

Another fantastic stop for nature and animal lovers is the Global Wildlife Center – a 900-acre property where about 4,000 deer, giraffes, zebras, camels and other animals co-exist. For a moment, you wonder if you are in Louisiana or Africa! You can take the center’s “Safari Wagon” out to meet the animals up close. What an amazing thrill to pet a giraffe on the head, and feed a llama right out of your hand!

La Provence

For dinner, try a visit to La Provence by celebrity chef John Besh. The restaurant is a charming and cozy French farmhouse. Out back, they grow vegetables, herbs and even raise pigs and chickens. Most of the restaurant’s ingredients are taken directly from the property or from a farm just 20 minutes away. This is true farm to plate dining – it’s no wonder that patrons rave about the wonderful and fresh flavors! Just take a look at some of the menu items – homemade chicken liver pate, goat cheese stuffed squash blossoms, oysters “ooh la la,” ahi tuna with fava bean pesto, a chocolate peanut bar with salted caramel for dessert – and you’ll know what an incredible meal is waiting for you. They say dining is recreation in these parts, and it’s not hard to see why.

If you’re ready to see where the best of Louisiana’s nature, food and music merges together, come explore Louisiana’s Northshore!
