Family Thrills in Lake County, Illinois
By Jody Sidle
Maybe you’re a bit intimidated by the idea of taking a family vacation to big-city Chicago. Let me suggest, then, Lake County, Illinois – a wonderful place to take a family vacation, and it’s just north of the city. Lake County offers the thrills of an amazing amusement park at Six Flags Great America, as well as the fun of an indoor water park at KeyLime Cove.
Family Outing to Six Flags Great America
I have visited many amusement parks in my time, but Six Flags Great America in Gurnee is top-notch when it comes to ultimate thrill rides.
“Batman The Ride” is the world’s first inverted, outside looping roller coaster. Then you have “Superman: Ultimate Flight,” where you will soar head-first along a twisted steel track! Next try “The Dark Knight Coaster” – a thrill ride where the entire trip is in complete darkness. Those who enjoy extreme speeds will love “Vertical Velocity.” This ride gets to 70 mph in less than four seconds – that’s super-fast!
“Raging Bull” is currently the tallest, fastest and largest roller coaster at Six Flags. My personal favorite was the American Eagle – a classic wooden coaster featuring side-by-side tracks for a real roller coaster race.
Can you believe that with seven miles of roller coaster tracks, Six Flags in Gurnee is still adding more? New in 2014, is Goliath - the tallest, steepest and fastest wooden roller coaster in the world! Don’t be put off, though, if you aren’t quite so adventurous, or if you’re traveling with smaller children. They have plenty of family rides you can do that are just as fun.
Be sure to check the park’s calendar before planning your visit, as it closes during the winter months.
All-Weather Fun at KeyLime Cove
Next on your agenda should be KeyLime Cove Indoor Waterpark Resort. This 65,000-square-foot water park looks and feels like paradise, with the interior decorated so that it seems like you are outdoors, but with temperatures kept comfortably warm. There are tube rides, water slides and a lazy river. You can go all out on the wild rides or simply relax poolside. And just like at Six Flags, there’s plenty for the little ones to do.
While family members are wearing themselves out on the rides, you can head over to the Paradise Mist Spa for some relaxation. They offer massages, facials and body wraps. Even the kids can enjoy the spa, where they can make their own scrubs and oils and get a manicure just like Mom! If that doesn’t appeal to your little ones, then Riptide Reef Arcade could be the answer –hundreds of games cater to all ages.
My family and I had an absolute blast in Lake County, Illinois, and I’m sure you will too!
