The Palm Beaches, Florida: Outdoor Adventure Offerings

By Heiko Obermoeller

The Palm Beaches region of Southeast Florida has long been known as the embodiment of an authentic holiday experience in sunny Florida. As I board the catamaran “Mariah” in the morning at a small marina in North Palm Beach, the weather is absolutely beautiful. We glide through the gentle waters of Lake Worth Lagoon, heading toward the sun, and I get a good taste of what is to follow: an extraordinary dream getaway.

A Sailing Trip on the Catamaran Mariah

I got a chance to test my photography skills on my catamaran trip. Again and again, I took pictures as we sailed through shimmering turquoise waters along Singer Island and past the many impressive villas lining Lake Worth Lagoon, also known as the Intracoastal. It was simply a beautiful day in The Palm Beaches as a gentle breeze took us out into the ocean. Along the coast, you’ll find dream beaches as far as the eye can see. After a short while, everyone on board bathed in the sun and enjoyed the fresh fruit and drinks that were offered.

A Thrilling Airboat Ride through the Everglades

After this great start and a quick refreshment, we drove west into the heart of The Palm Beaches, where we took an airboat tour through the fascinating ecosystem of the Everglades. We were greeted with a hearty hug by our captain, “Wild Lyle,” and soon we were soaring effortlessly over swampland covered by sea grass. We stopped to listen to the sounds of bullfrogs or to look at sunbathing alligators up close. Toward the end of the tour, our guide let me steer the boat, an experience I won’t soon forget.

Untouched Nature in John D. MacArthur Beach State Park

The next day, safely protected from the sun by my new “Wild Lyle” airboat captain hat, I visited John D. MacArthur Beach State Park. Located along Lake Worth Lagoon, the park is a great example of the untouched natural landscapes that once covered all of South Florida. Here you can hike for kilometers and encounter countless birds and rare plants up close. After a short hike along the beach, I rented a kayak and explored the gentle waters of Lake Worth Lagoon, home to many sea dwellers, including dolphins, manatees and countless fish.

The Fascinating Ecosystem around Jupiter Inlet

From here, I drove north to Jupiter, an old nautical town where you´ll find another fascinating ecosystem around Jupiter Inlet. I climbed the 105 stairs of the Jupiter Lighthouse, built in 1860, one of the region’s oldest landmarks, and enjoyed the great views of the surrounding landscapes and the Loxahatchee River. Next I headed out on a hike along the Nature Trail, which meanders through mangrove-covered swampland and ends at a little overlook with great views of a manatee retreat. In the nearby Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Museum, exhibits commemorate the cultural heritage of the region and the natives who lived here thousands of years ago.

The Palm Beaches fascinate me with the great mix of relaxed, sunny atmosphere and amazing, untouched nature. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!
