Palm Beach, Florida: Theatre, Music and Art Events

By Serena Lorien

Located on the south-eastern coast of Florida, the Palm Beaches are known for their beautiful beaches, great shopping and luxury resorts. But beyond the well-known attractions, Palm Beach also offers fantastic theatre and great music, along with hundreds of diverse arts and cultural events throughout the year. On my recent visit, I had the chance to explore this huge variety of cultural attractions and world-class entertainment.

On Stage – Ballet and Opera

The cultural prowess of The Palm Beaches has led to an unusual situation: Miami City Ballet, named for the city to the south, has actually been a fixture in the Palm Beaches for nearly 30 years. The company performs more shows at the world-class Kravis Center in Palm Beach than anywhere else. Hailed by The New York Times as “one of America’s most-beloved dance companies,” Miami City Ballet has a repertoire of nearly 100 ballets. Check out the schedule when you’re in town, for your chance to see everything from the classic Romeo and Juliet, to the holiday smash favourite George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker™, to new works by the most visionary choreographers of today.

Taking in a performance of Palm Beach Opera at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is another must-do while visiting the area. Palm Beach Opera has been presenting shows with an international standard of excellence for more than 50 years. Each year, several world-class operas are performed, many with nationally and internationally recognized stars. I was lucky enough to take in a presentation of Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville,” which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Amazing Art at the Street Painting Festival

I was fortunate to visit while the Street Painting Festival in downtown Lake Worth was taking place. It’s an amazing festival where the downtown streets are covered in chalk paintings. You can browse the art, while listening to open-air concerts and enjoying tasty treats. I loved the joyful atmosphere and enjoyed viewing the technically brilliant art, including one of a 3D Oscar red carpet, where attendees had pictures taken. It was an incredible experience.

The Street Painting Festival was just one of many arts events that take place throughout the area. Some other notable yearly events include ArtsPalmBeach, a large show of contemporary art; the Palm Beach Jewelry, Art and Antique Show, the largest of its kind in the nation; and FOTOfusion, a huge convention of photography instructors from around the country.

Live Theatre Performances Around the Palm Beaches

If you believe that the world is a stage, then you will cheer for all of the live theatrical venues around the Palm Beaches. The Lake Worth Playhouse has a “never-be-dark” policy, which means you’ll enjoy performances all year ‘round at this restored 1920s play house. The Delray Beach Playhouse offers everything from Broadway shows to children’s theatre performances in a community playhouse setting. Meanwhile, at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, you can catch a Broadway performance in a beautiful, multi-million dollar facility.

As you can see with so much to do and see, you can always find something to pique your interest in Palm Beach County, so book your art-centric holiday to this brilliant destination today.
