The Palm Beaches: Florida Vacation for the Whole Family

By Jessica Fox

With 75 kilometers of beautiful Atlantic Ocean beaches, world-class golf, perfect weather, friendly people and endless options for fun, The Palm Beaches are the best way to experience Florida for everyone in your family. And while The Palm Beaches are known for their beautiful sands and surf, let’s not forget all of the great family activities in this gorgeous area. So bring the kids and let’s explore!

Lion Country Safari: An Experience Like No Other

Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee is the first drive-through safari in America. Receiving visitors since 1967, it has been chosen year after year as one of the best attractions in Florida. My experience there was wonderful! Seeing wild animals wandering freely so close to the car was great. That day, I fed the giraffes, touched the rhinos and threw apples to the chimpanzees. Lories landed on me, and I gave them nectar to drink. I also got close-up views of the elegant and always well-dressed Caribbean flamingos. Imagine how much fun your children will have with these one-of-a-kind encounters. They were magical moments I will never forget.

Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society

The Palm Beach Zoo features more than 1,400 animals with multiple shows and animal encounters throughout the day. I saw really interesting animals including graceful flamingos, big cats including a jaguar, and odd animals I had never seen before such as the dog/bear-like bush dog, a rare albino alligator and the quirky Patagonian cavy, a large rodent.

If you want a more up-close experience, why not try an animal encounter? For an extra fee, you can hang out with gigantic tortoises, feed black bears, pet a two-toed sloth or take photos with a capybara. And to cool off from the Florida sun, there’s a popular interactive fountain for kids to splash around in, so don’t forget to bring bathing suits and towels. The Palm Beach Zoo is a great place to spend an entire day!

South Florida Science Center and Aquarium

Next to the zoo is the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, another fun place to explore with your family. In fact, both attractions offer an admission called a “Dual Discovery Pass” that will give you a days’ access to both!

The Science Center is perfect for busy kids – there are lots of hands-on activities that will keep little hands busy. You can experience a hurricane simulator, check out a real “Tiger Shark” submarine and puzzle over hands-on brain teasers. The aquarium gives you an opportunity to get close to Florida’s varied sealife. My favorites were in a tank called Shipwreck Cove, which was full of impressive sea predators like barracudas and a giant eel. At the planetarium, there are multiple shows throughout the afternoon that have different topics for kids of all ages, which I thought was a great touch for families with children in different age ranges.

If it’s a family vacation you seek, look no further than the diversity of attractions offered in the beautiful Palm Beaches!
